“How beautiful on the mountains are the feet of those who bring good news, who proclaim peace, who bring good tidings, who proclaim salvation, who say to Zion, “Your God reigns!” (Isaiah 52:7 NIV)
We seldom imagine that there is real beauty in the feet of those we meet, but truly there is. Usually we notice the smile, feel warmth in the touch, or hear in the words that are chosen to show compassion; these are ways that people find inner beauty. Certainly not in a body part usually covered. It does not matter whether our feet are short or long, wide or narrow, or have no feet in the physical sense, each of us has these metaphorical “bases” upon which we build, and share, faith and witness to the Resurrection..
The beauty that comes forth from the work of our discipleship has always been the key factor of this critical work that we have been called to do as disciples in the world today. The work that our deep and abiding faith inspires, the feet that inspired the Prophet Isaiah long before Jesus was born, came true as one of the great and lasting prophetic statements of witness shared by Paul in the Epistle to the Romans (10:15). (And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news
I am continually inspired by the “feet” of those I have been serving at Mount Gilead First Presbyterian Church. So many work tirelessly, and seamlessly, to ease the burdens of others. So many lift and carry those who are struggling to put one foot in front of the other. It makes no difference whether the neighbor is a longstanding member of the church, or a friend that we have never met. Preaching is an amazing thing, but the ministry of people takes so many gifts to reach them all. As a pastor, it is well to be able to invoke a question, or even to cause a little outrage from time to time in the course of asking for each of us to engage in self-examination, but the work that inspires me is to see a congregation doing all of the background tasks and kindnesses that show a church as a mission of God in the world. I see that time and time again.
How beautiful are the feet of those who traverse the mountains and help us navigate the valleys that we all suffer through. It is not a question. It is a statement of faith that the congregation of Mount Gilead First Presbyterian Church lives and breathes every day. They are ready and we invite you, through this blog format, to share your thoughts, your joys and your concerns, through this website and Facebook page.https://www.facebook.com/firstpresmg. And please watch join us on Facebook for our live streaming during our Sunday service at 10:30am. Comment and question. Re-energize and start you week with a welcome from FirstPresMG!
